Glaze materials

Glass former
The backbone of every glaze — silica melts with the fluxes into glass.
Clays
Alumina and silica in a form that suspends the bucket and stiffens the melt.
Fluxes, feldspars & frits
What brings the melting point down to your cone; the choice of flux shapes surface and colour response.
Opacifiers
Turn a clear glaze white or milky.
Colorants
Metal oxides and carbonates that give a glaze its colour; most need care in handling.
Additives
Small amounts that fix suspension, brushing, and settling without changing the fired result.
